These days everyone is multitasking and it is hard to find the time to fully commit to learning something new - the internet gives people a little knowledge on a lot of subjects and it can be very distracting.

As learning designers we look for ways to engage the learner, but it is a two way street, learners should be encouraged to make physical notes in order to retain knowledge, rather than just imagining they will absorb it from a screen.
When you get distracted, it takes roughly 25 minutes to return your focus to the original task. Over time, multitasking could mean you only gain a partial understanding of various different skills or concepts, without acquiring a full knowledge or mastery of any. Writing down what you’ve learned helps cement it in your mind.
