Firstly, I'm hoping I'm just in time to say 'Happy new year!'. It feels like this tradition is a much bigger deal in Scotland (where I'm from) than in England (where I live). So, I like to do my bit to keep the tradition alive and wish as many people as possible all the best for the new year before the first half of January is out!

This is a time when many reflect on the past year and look forward to what's to come, and the learning industry is no exception. It's always interesting to see what's being touted as the next big thing for the year ahead and find out if there's anything new on the horizon that should be on my radar.

This list of trends contains many of the usual suspects such as VR/AR, gamification, micro learning, content curation, interactive video and social learning - all of which have been around for a while and seem to be gaining in momentum. The one new trend that I was interested to read about is that of intelligent assistants/chatbots. I generally have mixed feelings about this type of technology but can see how it could come into its own to address 'just in time' training needs. I'm going to be watching this space closely in 2018!
